Sheth Shree Gopaldasji Mohota, a leading and eminent industrialist of this region had the foresight and vision to realize the necessity of the unity of the business community for the development of this region industrially. Along with his other colleagues Shri Durgaprasadji Saraf, Shri Narsingdasji Mor, Shri Khushalchandji Daga, Shri Hanumanprasadji Nevatia laid the foundation of Nag-Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) in the year 1944.
Those being the post war days of scarcity of essential commodities throughout the world. India was no exception to it. Government formulated various schemes for fair distribution of essential goods to the consumers at reasonable rates through the distributing
channels-
Chamber was entrusted with this stupendous task and successfully carried out the distribution of coal, textile & other commodities through its trade channels time to time.
The Impetus
Under the leadership of Shri V. D. Rathi in the year 1965 trading community in general started taking keen interest in the activities of Chamber and thereafter Chamber grew in leaps & bounds.
Milestone
In the year 1969, Silver Jubilee was celebrated when Shri Ramnathji Poddar, the then President of FICCI was present as a Chief Guest and Bar. S.K. Wankhede, Maharashtra State Minister of Industries, Seth Shri Lalchandji of M/s Walchand Hirachand and other luminaries from all parts of the country graced the occasion. A Souvenir highlighting Chamber's activities was also published.
MemberShip Strength
Chamber can boast of being the largest representative body of the trade in this area with about many Trade Associations of the area affiliated to it and thus thousands of business houses are actively associated with the activities of the Chamber.
Activities
From time to time Chamber has taken up the cause of trade and has successfully solved the problems through negotiations with the concerned authorities. Chamber was also entrusted by the Government with the job off issuing permits for distribution of Cloth-yarn; coal etc. at the time of scarcity.
The Chamber was the first to initiate the formation of Octroi Free Zone at Nagpur. The Chamber has been authorised by Ministry of Commerce to issue Certificate of Origin to the Exporters of the area. It has also successfully agitated against the draconian Sales Tax Act of 1979 and of 1992 which were subsequently withdrawn.
It has also actively participated in the agitation of Abolition of obnoxious octroi levy in Co-ordination with the Indian Merchants Chamber, Bombay. Apart from trade interest Chamber was the first to promote Nagpur Management Association in 1971 with Dr. R. D. Mohota as its President. Through this Association Professional Management Training is being imparted to the participants through regular lectures and seminars. A regular Diploma Course in Management recognized by the Nagpur University is also conducted.
Representation
Chamber is also represented on various Advisory Committees of the Central & State Government’s viz. Railways, Direct Taxes, Posts & Telegraphs etc.
Affiltation
Chamber is affiliated to Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), since past several years and its representatives are nominated on various sub- committees of FICCI.
Chamber is also affiliated to Indian Merchants Chamber, Bombay and Federation of Associations of Maharashtra, Mumbai.
Privileged Visitors
The Chamber has the proud privilege of the visits of Pt. Jawaharlalji Nehru, Dr. Rajendraprasadji, Shri H. N. Bahuguna, Babu Jagjivanramji, Shri Morarji Desai, Shri Guljarilalji Nanda, Dr. Reddy, Shri T.A. Pai, Smt. Tarkeshwari Sinha, Shri Y.B. Chavan, during their tenure as Minister.
Distinguished Industrialists of the Country namely Shri Naval Tata, Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj, Shri Ramnathji Poddar, Shri Walchand Hirachand have also visited the Chamber.
Shri Rameshwarprasad Thakur and Shri Shantaram Potdukhe the then State Ministers of Finance also visited the Chamber and guided members on current affairs.
The then Finance Minister, Shri Manmohan Singhji addressed a large meeting of the business community and acquainted them about the present Economic Reforms initiated by the Government.
Social Responsibilition
Chamber has not lagged behind in fulfilling its social obligations and has promoted Nag Vidarbha Chamber Charitable Trust, through which generous aid from time to time is provided to the victims of natural calamities such as flood, cyclone, accident etc., Trust has generously contributed towards Chief Ministers, Relief Fund for the Earthquake victims of Latur and Osmanabad districts.
Golden Jubilee Celebration
Chamber celebrated its Golden Jubilee in year 1993-94, the inauguration of which was graced by Shri Kantikumarji Poddar, Presedent, F.I.CCI. Shri R.S. Rathore, Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) addressed the members on the occasion.
Diwali Sneh Sammelan, the usual annual feature was graced by Shri Jawaharlalji Darda, Minister of Industries Maharashtra State and presided over by Shri Kishore Dorle, the Mayor, Magpur Municipal Corporation.
A Seminar on Essential Commodities Act, Prevention of Food Adulteration Act and Weights & Measures Act was held on 25th December, 1993 at Hotel Centre Point, which was conducted by Shri A.S. Kasliwal, Chairman, Internal Trade, Sub-Committee, FICCI and also attended by the Co-Chairman Shri Sureshji Kotak, Internal Trade Sub Committee.
Shri Arun Gujrathi, Minister Urban Development, Maharashtra State addressed the members of the Chamber on 15th January, 1994. He assured of his full co- operation in solving the octroi problems of the city and also other problems concerning his portfolio.
Cultural program, ‘Akhil Bhartiya Hasya Kavi Sammelan’ was held on 29th January, 1994 at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall. Shri Madhup Pande conducted the program and was attended by Shri Sureshji Sharma, Shri Hullad Muradabaji, Shri Ashok Chakradhar, Smt. Indira Indu and Shri Jagdish Solanki and Shri Niraj.
A Souvenir with valuable articles on the subjects concerning trade and industry and carrying sweet memories of the Past Presidents as well as the activities by then Executive Committee, together with the brief history of the Chamber and photographs of personalities and events was published to commemorate the celebrations.
A seminar all Intelligence Engineering (H.R.D) was held on 6th February, 1994. The project Director was Dr. R.D. Mohota. Shri Gurulmansingh Saran of Usha Rectifires, Delhi was the chief Guest and Shri Seetha of IndoRama, presided the program.
